Dr. Anna Rempel
Dr. Anna Rempel graduated high school in Maize, KS after moving around a lot in her early years, with her father in the Air Force. She graduated with her biology degree from Newman University in 2012 where she also played softball. She went on to attend Wichita’s KU School of Medicine, graduating in 2016.
Dr. Anna completed her residency at Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program in Salina in July of 2019.
When Dr. Anna isn’t curled up with a book, she also enjoys the outdoors, gardening, biking and taking their dog Tessa for a walk. Dr. Anna especially enjoys women’s health, obstetrics and mental health.
Dr. Anna and Dr. Scott are excited to be living in Quinter and getting to know the surrounding communities. They have begun their practice at Bluestem Medical and are currently seeing patients and accepting new patients.
Dr. Doug Gruenbacher
Dr. Doug Gruenbacher was born and raised in Andale, Kansas. He is a 1995 graduate of Kansas State University and a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Doug completed his residency at UKSM-W Smoky Hill Family Practice Residency, Salina, Kansas in 2002 in Family Medicine and has been Board Certified since 2002. Dr. Doug has a special interest in EGD, colonoscopies as well as general adult medicine.
Dr. Doug has practiced in Quinter, Kansas since 2002 as a partner at Bluestem Medical and as a staff member at Gove County Medical Center. He is a preceptor for the University of Kansas Medical Center in Northwest Kansas preceptorship program and other rural programs associated with medical education in this area. Dr. Doug was selected by the AAFP to be the family physician Torchbearer in the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay in England. He is the recipient of the 2010 University of Kansas Preceptor of Year Award and is highly involved in the KAFP Faces in Family Medicine program. Dr. Doug is the 67th president of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians and continues to serve as a state delegate and advocate for Family Medicine.
Dr. Doug and his wife, Dr. Shelly Gruenbacher have four children and are involved in various youth sports, church, 4-H and many other community events. They were a vital part in the building of a community wellness center that supports their love of exercise and pursuit of advocating healthy lifestyles. In 2022, Dr. Doug finished the Leadville 100-mile train race and continues to participate in mountain trail races in Colorado.
Dr. Michael Machen
Dr. Michael Machen was born in Smith Center, Kansas, and grew up in Concordia, Kansas. Dr. Machen has practiced in Quinter, Kansas since 1986 as a partner at Bluestem Medical and now as a medical staff member at Gove County Medical Center. He serves as the Network Site Director for the University of Kansas Medical Center in Northwest Kansas and assists in directing the preceptorship program and rural programs associated with medical education in this area.
Dr. Machen received the Doug Parks Rural Preceptor Award from KUMC-Wichita in 1999. He received the KAFP Exemplary Teacher Award, part-time category in 2005 and then won the national award for Exemplary Teacher part-time category with the American Academy of Family Practice in 2005. He was also awarded the Rural Preceptor of the Year for the State of Kansas in 2008. In 2014, he received the Ad Astra Outstanding Volunteer Award. He then received the Kansas Emergency Medical Services Association Physician of the Year in August of 2015, the Ad Aspera Award – KUMC Volunteer Faculty, 2017 (KUMC Medical Student Assembly) and then was named the Kansas Academy of Family Practice Physician of the Year in 2018. In 2020, Dr. Machen was awarded full professorship in Family and Community Medicine by the Kansas University Medical Center. He has also served on several boards and committees such as the local school board, Kammco Board of Directors, Kansas Heart and Stroke Collaborative, EMS Medical Advisory Committee, Kansas Governor’s Advisory Committee on Trauma, KSHSAA Medical Advisory Board, Kansas Rural Health Association Board, Kansas State Board of Healing Arts Review Committee for Opioid Use, and was a former Kansas Medical Society President.
Dr. Machen and his wife, Susan have four children and have seven grandchildren. Dr. Machen is an avid KU fan and enjoys hunting and fishing.
Dr. Scott Rempel
Dr. Scott Rempel was born and raised in Newton, KS. He went to college at Washington University in St. Louis and graduated with degrees in medical anthropology and public health in 2012. Four years later, he graduated from medical school at KU School of Medicine in Salina.
Dr. Scott has practiced in Quinter, Kansas since 2019 as a partner at Bluestem Medical and now as a medical staff member at Gove County Medical Center. He is a preceptor for University of Kansas Medical Center in Northwest Kansas preceptorship program and other rural programs associated with medical education in this area. He regularly mentors and teaches 1st-4th year medical students and pre-med students.
In his spare time, Dr. Scott enjoys anything that has to do with being in the mountains (usually Colorado), hunting, running and being outside whenever possible.
Dr. Shelly Gruenbacher
Dr. Shelly Gruenbacher was raised in Stockton, Kansas. She is a 1995 graduate from the University of Kansas and a 1999 graduate from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Shelly completed her residency at UKSM-W Smoky Hill Family Practice Residency, Salina, Kansas in 2002 in Family Medicine and has been Board Certified since 2002.

She is a preceptor for University of Kansas Medical Center in Northwest Kansas preceptorship program and other rural programs associated with medical education in this area. She regularly mentors and teaches 1st-4th year medical students and pre-med students. Dr. Shelly received the 2010 Doug Parks, MD Community Preceptor Teaching Award. She is active on the KAFP Foundation Board and is also a member of the KU Medical Alumni Board.
Dr. Shelly and her husband, Dr. Doug Gruenbacher have four children and are involved in various youth sports, church, 4-H, and many other community events. They were a vital part in the building of a community wellness center that supports their love of exercise and pursuit of advocating healthy lifestyles. Dr. Shelly is an avid KU fan and also enjoys running and skiing.
Jamie Mense, APRN
Jamie Mense, APRN Jamie’s nursing journey began as a CNA, fueling her ambition to become a Nurse Practitioner. She pursued a Doctor of Nursing Practice at KU, emphasizing high-level nursing and research. Dedicated to rural healthcare, Jamie finds joy in serving Kansas communities, prioritizing compassionate care. She values patient stories, and empowering them to make informed health decisions.
Excited about joining a premier healthcare team in northwest Kansas, Jamie eagerly anticipates serving her hometown community. With her supportive family they enjoy cheering on the Chicago Cubs, engaging in church activities, sports, music, and embracing small-town life.
